How long does Invisalign treatment take?
It’s one of the questions we’re asked most often. The short answer: most Invisalign treatments take anywhere from a few months to around a year and a half, but it depends a lot on each person. Here’s what affects it and what you can do to keep it on track.
Typical length by type of case
Every treatment is planned individually, so these timeframes are only a general guide. We give you an exact estimate after the initial assessment.
| Type of case | Typical length |
|---|---|
| Mild cases: slight crowding or small gaps | Around 3 to 6 months |
| Moderate cases | Around 6 to 12 months |
| Complex cases or bite problems | 12 to 18 months, or a little longer |
What does it depend on?
1. What needs correcting
Closing a small gap between two teeth isn’t the same as correcting a crossbite. The more the teeth need to move, the more aligners you’ll need and the longer it takes.
2. How many hours you wear them
This is the factor that depends most on you. Aligners need to be worn around 20 to 22 hours a day: you only take them out to eat, drink anything other than water and brush. If you wear them less, your teeth don’t move as planned and treatment takes longer.
3. Switching aligners on time
Each set is changed every one or two weeks, depending on your plan. Skipping or delaying a change holds everything else up.
4. Check-ups
We see you every few weeks to make sure everything is progressing well. Sometimes a few extra refinement aligners are needed at the end to perfect the result. That’s normal and part of the process.
Tips to keep it on track
- Set an alarm after each meal to remind you to put them back in.
- Always carry the case: aligners often get lost wrapped in a napkin.
- If you lose or break one, let us know as soon as possible.
- Don’t skip your check-ups.

Frequently asked questions
Can treatment be sped up?
What matters most is wearing your aligners for the recommended hours and not skipping any changes. Any other option is assessed individually by the clinician.
What if I don’t wear them long enough one day?
A one-off slip doesn’t usually ruin treatment, but if it keeps happening, the plan takes longer. If it happens, mention it at your next check-up.
Will I need to wear anything afterwards?
Yes. A retainer, usually worn at night, keeps your teeth from moving back.
