What’s the difference between a filling and a root canal?

When decay is only in the outer layers of the tooth, we simply clean it and fill the cavity with a tooth-coloured filling. It’s a quick treatment that’s barely noticeable.

If the decay has reached the nerve, or the tooth has been knocked, you may need a root canal: we clean the inside of the tooth, disinfect it and seal it. This removes the pain and avoids having to take the tooth out.

Signs you should come in

  • A tooth hurts when you chew or with hot and cold
  • You can see a dark spot or a hole in a tooth
  • You’ve chipped a tooth or lost an old filling
  • You have strong pain that won’t settle or a swollen gum

What the treatment involves

  1. DiagnosisWe examine the tooth and, if needed, take an X-ray to see how far the decay goes.
  2. Local anaestheticWe numb the area so the treatment is comfortable.
  3. TreatmentWe clean out the decay and place the filling, or carry out the root canal if the nerve is affected.
  4. CheckWe check your bite and explain how to look after the tooth over the next few days.

Frequently asked questions

Does a root canal hurt?

It’s done under local anaesthetic, so you shouldn’t feel pain during the procedure. Afterwards you may have some mild discomfort for a few days, which is managed with ordinary painkillers.

How long does a filling last?

It depends on its size, where it is and your oral hygiene, but a well-made filling that’s looked after can last many years. We check it at your check-ups.

Do I need a crown after a root canal?

For many back teeth it’s recommended, because the tooth becomes more fragile. We assess each case and explain it beforehand.
